Hybrids Clubs Are They In Your Bag?

    By Sweeper | December 9, 2007

Hybrid club, utility club or rescue club, call them whatever you want, just make sure you have one or two in your bag! Hybrid clubs are designed to replace your long irons (2, 3, 4 and sometimes 5). Ben Hogan CFT Hybrid Club

Although slightly longer than regular irons they help get the ball airborne much easier because of the lower center of gravity. And because they are shorter than fairway woods, they are easier to control.

Hybrid clubs also offer a wide variety of shots and uses. For instance, out of the rough a hybrid is perfect. The added club head weight and wider sole, cuts through long rough with no problem.

Hybrids are also great for chipping. Whenever I have a lot of green to work with, I use my 4 hybrid like a putter. The added loft carries the ball enough to get it onto the green but the ball starts rolling a lot sooner like a putt than compared to a wedge.

One of my favorite shots with my hybrid is a punch shot. If I find myself stuck under a tree or if I need a low penetrating shot, the hybrid is my first club chose. I play the ball back in my stance and use a 1/4 height swing. The ball comes out nice and low every time.

I carry a #3 (21 degree) and #4 (24 degree) hybrid clubs in place of my 3 and 4 irons. And depending on the course I play, I will sometimes remove my 3 wood and replace it with my #2 (19 degree) hybrid. I've found that, although I lose a few yards, I get better control with the hybrid off the tee, than I do with my 3 wood.

As you can see, hybrids clubs are a club you need to have in your bag. If you don't carry one or two, I strongly suggest you reconsider. I think that the added benefits of the club will help you save a few strokes during your next round. And no matter what your handicap, saving strokes is what we all want.
